Even if the situation at Guantanamo fits Rear Admiral Buzby's description, or perhaps even better than Buzby describes, I fail to see how the nature of wrongful imprisonment and the suspension of habeas corpus is somehow negated. If you take me and imprison me in a four star hotel with everything I could ever want, but don't let me leave, it is still entirely wrong. The nature of the imprisonment is irrelevent to whether I should be imprisoned in the first place.
Admiral Buzby, you have denied detainees, some portion of which are innocent, a trial. You have kept the innocent from their families. You have denied them access to legal representation. You have denied them every ounce of liberty which they are entitled to as human beings without first making any effort to determine whether they have committed any crime.
The nature of how you have committed all these evils is irrelevant. If you had treated them brutally, you would only have compounded the many sins of this administration. Even if you are honest (which the fact that you even wrote such an article negates), it does not justify these sins. You, as a representative of the Bush administration, should be ashamed of all that has taken place at Guantanamo. Not because of the nature of the prison, but simply because such a place exists.
As if this were not enough, you now are attempting to excuse all this, the destruction of habeas corpus, the denial of legal representation, and wrongful imprisonment, on the basis of it not being a bad place to hang out for 5 years.
You should be ashamed, sir.
