New electoral college map for this week. It is worth noting that the polls that generate this map are taken from the period leading into the democratic convention. Any changes we might expect as a result of Obama's speech, McCain's selection of Palin, or the handling of Hurricane Gustav are not shown in this map, and we likely won't see for another couple weeks in it's fullest.
On that note, while the hurricane is devastating and shouldn't be viewed as some neutral political factor, it is naive to think it will have no effect on voters decision making. From a purely political perspective, I think this can go two ways: if it's mismanaged, the republicans will suffer a significant hit and lose and potential convention boost. If it is managed well, I think it is reasonable to say that John McCain will receive a significant boost, well beyond what we might expect from the typical convention. Thus far, McCain's coordination of the convention with the potential disaster has been handled exceptionally well. We'll see what occurs in Gustav's wake, both in New Orleans, and politically.
Ron Paul's Rally for the Republic is continuing as planned. Check it out here.
