Electoral College 9/1

New electoral college map for this week.  It is worth noting that the polls that generate this map are taken from the period leading into the democratic convention.  Any changes we might expect as a result of Obama's speech, McCain's selection of Palin, or the handling of Hurricane Gustav are not shown in this map, and we likely won't see for another couple weeks in it's fullest.

On that note, while the hurricane is devastating and shouldn't be viewed as some neutral political factor, it is naive to think it will have no effect on voters decision making.  From a purely political perspective, I think this can go two ways: if it's mismanaged, the republicans will suffer a significant hit and lose and potential convention boost.  If it is managed well, I think it is reasonable to say that John McCain will receive a significant boost, well beyond what we might expect from the typical convention.  Thus far, McCain's coordination of the convention with the potential disaster has been handled exceptionally well.  We'll see what occurs in Gustav's wake, both in New Orleans, and politically.

Ron Paul's Rally for the Republic is continuing as planned.  Check it out here.

As the Democratic Convention kicks off today, Barack Obama's electoral college score is at it's lowest point in the past month, while the number of swing states is at its highest.  The Obama summer is beginning to slip, and the campaign needs to "wow" people in convention, not just for the next few days, but significantly enough to surpass the bump McCain is going to get following the pronouncement of his VP and the Republican convention.  There will be a tribute to Ted Kennedy tonight which will inevitably overshadow Michelle Obama's speech.  Regardless of how she does, her speech is not going to be the memorable moment from the evening.

Secondly, an accountant in Minnesota has taken down I.R.S.  Read about it here.

Finally, here's this weeks electoral college map.

Secondly, latest national poll (Times/Bloomberg):
Obama: 42
McCain: 41
Nader: 4

Electoral College results for this past week, with an updated graph.  Note John McCain’s continued rise against Barack Obama over the past month.

Here's the electoral college for this week.  Good news for McCain.  Lean+Solid Obama is no longer greater than 270.  He has a (small) chance.  In this map, in order to win, he has to take Florida, Virginia, Ohio and Michigan.
